US to add $3 billion in military aid to Ukraine ‘to help preserve sovereignty’

U.S. President Joe Biden said on Thursday that he would provide $3 billion in additional military aid to Ukraine. It will be the largest military aid announcement since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

Exactly six months have passed since the start of the Russian invasion. It also marks Ukraine’s 31st independence day from the former Soviet Union. “The United States is committed to supporting the people of Ukraine as they continue to fight for their sovereignty,” Biden said in a statement, referring to Ukraine’s Independence Day. “This assistance will enable Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery systems, ammunition, anti-unmanned aerial vehicle systems and radars to defend itself in the long term,” he said.

Since the Biden administration took office in January 2021, Washington has pledged a total of $10.6 billion in security assistance to Ukraine.
